IRREGULAR ORBIT - ookworld's wobbly satellite
The Loved One

I've long been a fan of the 1965 movie based on Evelyn Waugh's 1948 novel, The Loved One. I've finally gotten around to reading the book. While less farcical than the movie, it is every bit as black-humored and somewhat creepier. Waugh's prose is masterfully and elegantly ornate, acidly satirical, drier than a crematory oven. It is a story of death, love and Anglo/US friction, set in Los Angeles, more specifically, in the orbit of the tony Whispering Glades cemetery. Situations develop cruelly.
