The High Window is Raymond Chandler's third Philip Marlowe novel, dating from 1942. I would almost call this a routine case, with a bit of a distanced feel. Marlowe keeps his distance from everyone, avoids getting entangled with the women and even avoids getting beaten up. He simply does a relatively neat job of taking it as it comes and slowly putting the pieces together in a case with nebulous goals and hateful clients. As always with Chandler, there's plenty of elegant prose and evocative settings. Here's some spoilery background on a throwaway reference in the book.
Gee, now my book report backlog is down to a mere half a dozen.
