Happy Groundhog Day! It used to be one of my favorite holidays because it was so unheralded, folkloric, non-commercial and, of course, absurd. But ever since that Bill Murray movie (amusing though it may have been), it's all been downhill into PR-land. And still so much squandered potential. Where are the drunken street revels? The fertility processions? The giant straw groundhog bonfires? The sideshow competitions? The motorcycle hillclimbs? Oh, never mind, the results are in. Six more weeks until Persephone digs her way out of the earth. Or am I thinking of vampires now?
