The Big Sleep

This was one helluva good read: The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. Chandler is smoother and more urbane than Hammett, but with every bit as much smart-assed bad attitude. Featuring detective Philip Marlowe, this is Chandler's first novel (1939), chock full of murder, sleaze and complications in a rainy October Los Angeles. It's filled with great lines -- that Marlowe, he's an elaborately witty guy. If you're inclined, here's a spoiler-filled essay on the book.
